The City of Washington operates a stormwater utility established and guided by the Stormwater Management Ordinance, the Tar-Pamlico River Basin Stormwater Management Program, along with a number of City policies that address the key principles and requirements of managing the stormwater system. The stormwater utility was established to properly manage the environmental impact of stormwater pollution and to improve the drainage capability of areas that are susceptible to flooding.
The Stormwater Management Program entails the following: Education and Outreach, Public Involvement and Participation, Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination, Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC), Post-Construction Stormwater Management for New Development and Redevelopment, and Pollution Prevention, and Good Housekeeping.
